Ethereumについて
Ethereum is the foundational Layer 1 for smart contracts, secured by a proof-of-stake consensus in which validators stake ETH to protect the network; staked ETH now represents roughly a third of total supply. It addresses the difficulty of combining decentralization with programmability while avoiding the gas and throughput limits that appear when a single chain tries to host high-frequency activity directly. Its core design uses the EVM as a global execution environment, separates execution from consensus, and pushes most activity down into Rollups so that the base layer acts mainly as a settlement and security anchor.
The trade-off is that L1 execution remains costly and relatively slow, so most user interaction has migrated to Rollups and sidechains, leaving the mainnet more a shared settlement and trust layer than a high-frequency front end. Scaling depends on external L2s rather than base-layer throughput, which also means value capture and user experience are partly ceded to the surrounding ecosystem.

Network upgrade: The Glamsterdam upgrade activated on the Sepolia testnet on October 6 and is scheduled for the Hoodi testnet on October 26 (with the gas limit raised to 200 million), introducing enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists; mainnet is expected in Q4 2026. Staked ETH exceeded 42 million, roughly one-third of circulating supply, with an entry queue of about 1.28 million ETH in mid-October.
Institutions & market: Corporate treasuries collectively hold over 6.1 million ETH (about $19 billion), with BitMine stack growing to roughly 6.03 million ETH, mostly staked; BlackRock has launched two tokenized money-market funds on Ethereum. However, U.S. spot Ether ETFs saw net outflows of about $954.8 million in the first half of October, Charles Schwab began rolling out external ETH wallet transfers, and VanEck withdrew its proposed Lido staked Ether ETF.
On March 12, 2026 BlackRock's iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ETHB) listed in the US with $107 million in seed capital, becoming the first spot ether ETF with built-in staking, and it began staking on May 4; Fidelity's FETH was cleared to stake on August 21, while Morgan Stanley's MSSE listed on NYSE Arca on July 28. A joint SEC-CFTC interpretive release on March 17 placed staking rewards outside securities law.
At the protocol level, Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade activated on Sepolia on October 6 and finalized successfully, and on October 16 the Foundation published the Hoodi schedule: activation at epoch 132,352 on October 26 at 17:42 UTC, with the gas limit rising from 60 million to 200 million. No mainnet date has been set. The upgrade includes EIP-7732 enshrined proposer-builder separation, EIP-7928 block-level access lists and EIP-8037 state-creation metering. The Foundation's research and development arm has been reorganised into a leaner Protocol team.
Ethereum's core question is converting its settlement-layer position into durable fee flow: after Fusaka compressed blob costs and cut L2 fees, mainnet revenue did not rise in step, and Glamsterdam's higher gas limit, enshrined PBS and parallel execution are near-term scaling but longer-term an attempt to make L1 the place settlement must happen. Demand has shifted from retail to institutions, with roughly $158 billion of stablecoins and more than half of global supply, tokenized Treasuries and money funds locking ETH as collateral, and staked ETFs selling a 3-4% coupon to pensions. Pressure comes from Solana contesting trading flow and corporate chains diverting payments, and Ethereum's answer is neutrality and censorship resistance rather than single-chain throughput.
