In January 2026 Waves activated deterministic finality on its mainnet: once two-thirds of validators endorse a block it can no longer be reorganized, moving the network from probabilistic to mathematically final settlement. That was the first step of a layered redesign. On September 13 the mainnet upgraded at block height 5,400,000, with HTX suspending deposits ahead of the change; around the upgrade window WAVES rose 24.6% on September 8 and gained more than 50% over a week.

Architecture was the year's main thread. Waves moved from a single chain to an L0, L1 and L2 stack, with L0 providing shared cross-chain security, L1 settling and L2 scaling. In August founder Sasha Ivanov published a whitepaper for an interconnected L2 network that reuses economic incentives and may later add ZK proofs, while the EVM-compatible Units Network inherits security from the base chain. Market reaction was unsparing: the token fell roughly 30% after the upgrade, remains about 98% below its all-time high, has some 27.7% of supply still locked, and trades mainly on mid-tier venues such as HTX, Bybit, Gate and MEXC.

Waves pushes the L2 framework and ZK integration forward, offering cross-chain security and settlement as infrastructure for other networks, and leaning on AI tooling and the launchpad to lift onchain activity so the layered design can be tested against real developer and capital inflows.
